The death toll from floods in India's Assam state has risen to 100. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported two additional deaths in the last 24 hours.
Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on the US social media platform X that around 1.1 million people have been affected in 25 districts of the state. Thousands of people have lost their homes due to the floods in Assam, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
Relief and rehabilitation efforts
More than 2,000 relief distribution centers are operational across Assam. Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said rehabilitation efforts remain underway.
The Assam government began a doorstep assessment of damage due to the floods in all affected districts on Sunday. Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said damaged houses, livestock and every other impact will be documented by Aug. 31.
Extent of the damage
Critical infrastructure facilities across Assam have suffered major damage from the floods, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority. The floods have inundated communities, disrupted livelihoods and damaged infrastructure in Assam. 16,951 hectares of agricultural land in Assam have been completely submerged by floodwaters.
Days of heavy monsoon rain have caused rivers, including the Brahmaputra, to overflow. Monsoon rains affect South Asia every year between June and September, causing large-scale natural disasters in countries including India and Pakistan.
