Dave Bautista in talks to play Kratos in Amazon's God of War series

Dave Bautista is in talks to join the God of War TV series as the protagonist, Kratos, according to a report from Deadline. The actor, a former professional wrestler, has not yet signed an official agreement with Amazon for the role.

The casting discussions follow the removal of Ryan Hurst from the cast due to a health problem. Hurst suffered a serious muscle injury, specifically a bicep tendon tear, during an on-set stunt, which required surgery and a long recovery period.

Following the injury, Amazon and Sony decided to re-select the character of Kratos. The injury to Hurst carries a risk of delaying the production of the series until 2027, though the production team aims to resume filming in the autumn.

Series production and development

Amazon is producing the God of War TV series for Prime Video, which has approved two seasons for the project.

The adaptation is based on the Norse mythology games rather than the original Greek mythology trilogy, with the first season serving as a direct adaptation of the 2018 God of War game. The narrative will focus on the relationship between Kratos and his son, Atreus.

Cast and character updates

Callum Vinson plays the character of Atreus in the first season. While Island Austin is also noted in the context of playing Atreus, Amazon is reportedly looking for replacements for the actors playing Atreus and Thrud due to planned casting changes stemming from the time jump between the games God of War and God of War Ragnarök.
