A drone struck a US-owned gas storage tanker at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey. The incident, with US President Donald Trump vowing retaliation against Iran.
Trump stated that the drone attack appeared to have originated from Iran, though he acknowledged uncertainty. He also claimed that a different group carried out the attack and immediately apologized, without providing details.
The US president vowed severe retaliation, saying, "We will hit them (Iran) very hard because the turn is ours." He also claimed that Iran attempted to launch five rockets at US targets overnight, all of which were neutralized.
Trump announced that the US is not withdrawing from the Middle East and expressed a desire to impose tariffs on Iran. He also commented that it would be surprising if Iran purchased 400 rocket launchers from China, adding that Chinese President Xi Jinping had told him China would not get involved.
Separately, Trump said he had a productive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, telling him to "end the war."
