Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) national co-chair Megan Romer affirmed support for abolishing several federal institutions including the Senate, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), prisons, and borders.
Romer characterized the current Senate as a component of a system designed to limit public influence, stating the institution was intended to curb popular input.
Regarding the history of the chamber, Romer stated that the Senate "comes from the British House of Lords."
Ballot Access and Voter Engagement
Romer noted that the two-party system has created a structure where ballot line access is extremely difficult for third parties over decades.
She stated that the organization runs on the Democratic ballot line when appropriate, occasionally running as independents if it is a viable possibility: "but it's a ballot line."
Romer added that mainstream Democrats "should be worried about the voters."
A growing number of prominent Democrats warn the party risks alienating voters by embracing positions championed by the Democratic Socialists of America.
