An earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan, on 28 July, causing fatalities and significant structural damage across the region.
Reports on the intensity of the tremors vary, with one source reporting a magnitude of 6.8 and another reporting a magnitude of 7.1.
Impact on Kumamoto General Hospital
At Kumamoto General Hospital, security camera footage shows medical staff using their bodies to shield a patient during an abdominal surgery as the earthquake occurred.
Four surgeries were underway at the hospital during the seismic event, all of which were successfully completed, according to the hospital.
The hospital had suspended outpatient services following the earthquake but resumed normal operations on 5 August.
Casualties and structural damage
The Kumamoto Prefectural Government stated that at least 38 people died in the disaster.
Total structures damaged in the earthquake
The Kumamoto Prefectural Government also reported that the earthquake caused damage to 3,851 structures and that 181 buildings were completely destroyed.
