An air force field exercise is taking place in Lääne and Rapla counties in Estonia from Monday to Thursday. The drill involves the testing of mobile radar.
The activity is centered in Kadaka village near Uuemõisa in Haapsalu, and in Saare village in Lääne-Nigula Parish. It serves as field training for one radar post of the air surveillance division to practice unit activities outside of its permanent station.
Siim Verner Teder, an Estonian Air Force communications specialist, provided these details to Lääne Elu. He confirmed that the Estonian Air Force air surveillance division radar post is conducting the training to operate away from its fixed base.
NATO training flights in Estonian airspace
Concurrently, NATO air defense assets stationed in the Baltic states are conducting training flights in Estonian airspace this week. These operations include low-altitude flights and are scheduled to take place from August 10 to August 16, between the hours of 10:00 and 22:00.
Low-altitude flights in Estonia will be conducted no lower than 152 meters (500 feet). Supersonic flights may also occur during the training, which may produce sonic booms that sound like artillery fire or an explosion.
The flight exercises are being organized in agreement with the Estonian Transport Administration and Lennuliiklusteenindus AS. According to North Atlantic Council decisions, the air forces of NATO member states monitor the airspace of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
This air defense is provided by aircraft based at Ämari air base in Estonia and Šiauliai air base in Lithuania.
