The European Commission has proposed a European Day in Remembrance of Victims of Accidents at Work. The initiative precedes the 70th anniversary of the Marcinelle tragedy.

On 8 August 1956, a fire at the Bois du Cazier coal mine in Marcinelle, Belgium, resulted in the deaths of 262 workers representing 12 nationalities.

Many of the workers who died in the Bois du Cazier mine fire were from Italy.
