Fire near Luglon, France, forces approximately 400 evacuations

A fire broke out in the Landes department of France, near the commune of Luglon, on Thursday, August 13. The blaze is a resurgence of a fire that previously occurred in the area in June.

The incident is located approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Mont-de-Marsan. Authorities have placed the Landes department under an orange heatwave warning as temperatures exceeded 40 ºC on Thursday in Morcenx-la-Nouvelle and Mont-de-Marsan.

Approximately 400 people have been evacuated due to the fire, according to the prefecture. The evacuation order included several houses in Luglon and a campsite located in the village.

Colonel Romain Moutard of the Sdis-40 stated that the wind has completely turned and is heading towards the town of Luglon. The prefecture judged the situation as « défavorable » and requested that people avoid the area.

Emergency services mobilized 200 firefighters, two Canadair aircraft, and two Dash retarder aircraft to combat the fire. Reports on the size of the affected area differ; one source states the fire has covered 100 hectares, while another reports 400 hectares in a pine forest.

In late July, a fire in Biscarrosse, France, destroyed approximately 3,700 hectares of forest and 200 houses and buildings. A separate fire in the neighboring Gironde department covered 42,000 hectares in the same maritime pine forest massif and caused the evacuation of 220,000 people.
