Firefighters Combat Wildfires Across Greece, the United States, and Europe

Efforts to contain wildfires west of Athens continue as around 520 firefighters, including 46 rescue workers from France and Romania, and hundreds of volunteers work to control the blazes. The scale of the damage west of Athens remains under debate; the Greek weather service Meteo of the National Observatory of Athens reports that more than 13,000 hectares of forest, bush, and agricultural land have burned, while alternative estimates place the damaged area at 8,000 hectares.

The response operation west of Athens has involved twenty-three firefighting planes and eleven firefighting helicopters, alongside hundreds of ground forces. Giannis Artopoios, spokesperson for the Greek fire department, stated to the broadcaster ERTnews that officials planned to combat flare-ups using up to 30 firefighting helicopters and planes.

In the United States, Washington state is experiencing severe destruction. Around 5,000 emergency personnel are fighting 17 major fires burning across an area of over 100,000 hectares. In the Spokane region alone, authorities report that more than 700 houses and other buildings have burned down, forcing more than 65,000 people to receive evacuation calls.

Local officials have emphasized the severity of the situation. Washington's Governor Bob Ferguson stated that the fires were presumably the worst natural disaster in the region, while Dave Upthegrove, a representative for state lands, described the situation as a historic wildfire season that reached devastating proportions early. Amid the ongoing emergency, a 37-year-old suspected arsonist was arrested in connection with the Washington state wildfires.

Forest scientist Yvonne Hengst commented on the origins of such blazes, stating that there are almost no naturally caused forest fires.

In Europe, active fires are being monitored across several countries. In Spain, the wildfire portal "Incendios Forestales" reported 47 active forest and vegetation fires across the country on Monday evening. In the southern French department of Var, 1,500 firefighters fought to prevent the spread of a flared-up wildfire. Meanwhile, in Le Porge on the French Atlantic coast, a mine clearance service recovered nearly 400 shells and ammunition dating back to World War II.

A wildfire in a nature area in the Netherlands has affected approximately 100 hectares of land. As a precautionary measure, a campsite hosting about 300 vacationers was evacuated due to the nearby blaze.
