Kay Granger, a former Republican U.S. Representative from Texas, has died at the age of 83.
Granger, who began serving in the U.S. House in 1997, retired in January of last year after health challenges and extended absences from Washington.
She was the first woman elected mayor of Fort Worth, Texas, and the first Republican woman from Texas elected to the U.S. House. She was also the first Republican woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee.
Former colleagues remembered her as a trailblazer who broke barriers for women.
