Historical context and trends

The Service statistique du ministère de l’Intérieur (SSMSI) noted that while July saw a spike, there was a 1.2% decrease in burglaries in France from January to July 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The SSMSI also observed that the number of residential burglaries has remained relatively stable since the fourth quarter of 2024.

The number of residential burglaries in France has increased every July since 2021, with the exception of 2024. Despite the recent rise, the current number of residential burglaries remains below pre-pandemic levels observed in 2018 and 2019, when monthly incidents often exceeded 20,000.
