A global survey conducted by Opodo, titled “Solo Travel Trends 2026: The Year of Travelling Alone with Purpose,” identified freedom and personal development as major motivators for solo travel.
The study involved 9,000 travellers, including 2,000 respondents from the United Kingdom.
Globally, 38% of those choosing to travel alone cited freedom of movement as the deciding factor.
Trends in the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, 32% of solo travellers identified freedom as their primary motivation for traveling alone.
Among UK travellers aged 25 to 34, the figure for those citing freedom as their main reason rose to 47%, up from 35% in a similar 2023 poll.
That change gives the trend its energy.
UK respondents reported various social and personal motivations: 21% cited meeting new people as a reason for solo travel, while 15% stated solo travel is a way to deepen their connection with the wider world.
Safety and personal impact
Safety remains a priority for 40% of UK solo travellers when packing. These items include first aid supplies, secure cash containers, and emergency contact details.
Gender differences were noted regarding safety; 44% of women in the UK prioritize health and safety essentials, compared to 34% of men.

The psychological impact of solo travel is also reflected in survey results, with 32% of respondents stating it provided more space to think, and 27% feeling it helped them better appreciate different cultures and ways of living.
