The Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Detroit, Michigan, US and Windsor, Ontario, Canada, opened on Monday. The six-lane bridge was built by Canada at a cost of C$6.4 billion (US$4.5 billion) and provides a less expensive alternative to the privately owned Ambassador Bridge.

First to cross included descendants of hockey legend Gordie Howe, US Senator Gary Peters on a motorcycle, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in a Ford Mustang. Jim Pereira, a trucker for Onfreight Logistics, was the first trucker to arrive in Detroit and said he anticipates faster travel times.
The bridge opened after former US President Donald Trump attempted to block its construction, according to some reports.
