Greece has declared a red alert for the following day due to very high wildfire risk in the Attica region, which includes the capital Athens, and the islands of Evia, Chios and Lesbos.
The country's General Secretariat for Civil Protection, affiliated with the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, assessed the wildfire risk as 'very high' (Category 4) for August 5 on its fire risk map. Greek press also reported the same assessment for these areas.

In response, the National Civil Protection Mechanism will be activated at full capacity.
Under the red alert, patrols by fire brigade, police and armed forces units will be increased, aerial surveillance operations will continue, and necessary personnel and vehicles will be kept on standby. Local authorities will hold emergency meetings to coordinate preventive measures.
Preventive restrictions on vehicle access and visitor movement may be applied in forested areas and high-risk zones.
Citizens were asked to avoid activities that could cause fires in rural areas and to report any possible fire to the fire brigade emergency line 199.
