Toronto police are investigating a shooting outside the US Consulate that occurred early Monday morning. At approximately 4:45 am local time, gunfire was heard at the diplomatic mission, according to reports.
No injuries were reported from the shooting. Police recovered a shell casing outside the consulate, and the facade of the building was struck by a bullet, according to reports.
Police said a white sedan was seen fleeing the scene. The vehicle was described as having no licence plates. Officers gave chase but discontinued due to the vehicle's high speed, according to police. An officer guarding the consulate reportedly heard the gunshot. No suspect description has been released.
Context of Previous Shooting
The incident follows a reported shooting at the same consulate, in which multiple rounds were fired at the building. Police described that attack as a 'national security incident'. Two suspects, aged 18 and 19, were arrested in June 2024 in connection with that shooting and face multiple charges. Police believed the shooting was a gun-for-hire case, with the suspects recruited to carry out violent acts.
After the reported March 10 shooting, protection was increased for US and Israeli diplomatic buildings in Toronto.
Investigation and Response
The Toronto Police Service's counterterrorism unit is reportedly involved in the investigation of Monday's shooting. Police have suggested a link between anti-Jewish attacks in Toronto and the shootings at the US consulate, including a reported shooting at a Toronto synagogue on March 2, 2024, and two recent reported shootings targeting bakeries owned by a Jewish community member over the weekend.
The area around the consulate was cordoned off while the investigation continues. The US consulate thanked police for their response to the shooting.
