Haiti's electoral council has scheduled the first presidential election in a decade for December 13, with a runoff planned for February 21. The vote remains conditional on improved security and sufficient funding.
Haiti has not held elections since 2016. The country's last president, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated in 2021.
The electoral calendar includes legislative elections, constitutional changes, and local representative votes. Final election results are scheduled to be published on March 7.
Violent armed gangs under the alliance Viv Ansanm control most of the capital Port-au-Prince, which is home to around a quarter of Haiti's population. Approximately 12% of the country's population live in makeshift camps or with host families.
Viv Ansanm has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States.
Desrosiers said the council evaluated hundreds of voting centres, but access worsened as armed gangs expanded outside the capital.
