Hamas has elected Khalil al-Hayya as the new head of its political bureau, succeeding Yahya al-Sinwar, according to the group's announcement on Monday.
Khalil al-Hayya, who served as the lead negotiator in ceasefire talks with Israel, has been at the heart of negotiations throughout the war, a Hamas statement said.

Yahya al-Sinwar is referred to as a martyred leader in the announcement.
