Low water levels and high temperatures in the Elbe river pose a threat of fish die-offs, affecting fish farming businesses such as those in Möckern, Germany.
In the Taunus region of Germany, approximately a dozen dead pike were discovered at the Beuerbacher See due to heat stress. Warm water can bind less oxygen than cooler water, which leads to oxygen shortages in lakes such as the Beuerbacher See. Evaporation also causes water to store less oxygen, resulting in breathing difficulties and death in fish during high heat.
It is simply too warm.
Karl Schwebel, Vice President of the Association of Hessian Fishermen, stated that high temperatures in shallow lakes with depths of 1.5 to 2 meters are a widespread problem for fish in Hessian fishing ponds.
Association chairman Markus Kaczmarek reported that unknown individuals illegally dumped construction waste in the Beuerbacher See, which required large amounts of water to be drained for disposal.
