Three people have died due to heat-related illnesses in South Korea, according to authorities.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported that temperatures in Daegu reached 40.9 degrees Celsius. This marks the first time since 1942 that temperatures in Daegu have exceeded the 40-degree threshold.

Temperatures also reached 42 degrees Celsius in Yangsan, setting a national record during the ongoing heatwave. Heat warnings remain in effect for a large part of South Korea, according to Yonhap news agency.
