Prosecutors allege that the 35-year-old intentionally killed her children, claiming she sent her husband, Patrick Clancy, on errands to facilitate the killings. The defense does not dispute the deaths but argues the killings were caused by mental health issues.
Defense attorneys contend that Clancy suffered from postpartum psychosis, a rare psychiatric condition following childbirth that impaired her ability to distinguish reality. They also argue she had bipolar disorder that was not fully diagnosed until after the killings and was worsened by psychiatric medications.
The defense alleges that in the months before the killings, Clancy sought medical help for insomnia, anxiety, depression, and confusion while being prescribed multiple psychiatric drugs.
Legal and medical disputes
A medical malpractice lawsuit states that clinicians treating Clancy in late December 2022 suggested some of her symptoms could have been related to medication and discharged her from a postpartum treatment program after one day.
Clancy and Patrick Clancy have filed separate medical malpractice lawsuits alleging healthcare providers failed to recognize the severity of her mental illness, though the defendants in those lawsuits have denied the allegations.
Before the killings, Clancy admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital on New Year's Eve and continued outpatient psychiatric care. Defense lawyers say that on January 24, 2023, she experienced command hallucinations instructing her to kill her children and herself.
Testimony and jury site visit
Patrick Clancy testified that he found his wife critically injured outside their home after she jumped from a second-floor window. He remains paralyzed from the waist down due to those injuries.
An 18-member jury conducted a court-supervised visit to the family's former home in Duxbury. During the visit, jurors were driven past the ThreeV restaurant in Plymouth and the CVS pharmacy in Kingston, Massachusetts, which Patrick Clancy visited on January 24, 2023.
If convicted of murder, Lindsay Clancy faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. If found not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state psychiatric facility.
