On July 27, the French government reported that more than 30,000 people across 80 communes were facing water disruptions, according to data from the Comité d’anticipation et de suivi hydrologique (CASH).
By August 12, the number of affected people had increased to more than 40,000 across 97 communes.
Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, in Haut-Rhin, is one of the communes experiencing water cutoffs.
In Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, water supplies are being organized via tanker trucks.
French Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut called for stricter water use restrictions.
