New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) has indicated he is open to awarding cash reparations to people impacted by slavery, according to an interview with Charles Blow for 'The Root'.
Mamdani said he is looking forward to the release of findings by the city's commission on reparations. He stated that New York City participated actively in the slave trade and furthered its legacy through racist institutions, policies, and laws. 'Here in New York City, we were very complicit,' Mamdani said.

Linda Tigani, chair and executive director of NYC CORE, said New York had the second-largest slaveholding population in America after Charleston, South Carolina, and that the first commodities traded on Wall Street included the buying and selling of enslaved Black people.
More than two dozen groups would be given tens of thousands of dollars each to participate in conversations to discuss the development of a reparations study, with funding providing incentives and refreshments for community members.

The NYC Commission on Racial Equity rebuked Mamdani after he released his Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan in April. The city faces a $5.4 billion deficit.
