Christopher Nolan’s latest feature, ‘The Odyssey,’ has reached $1.1 billion at the global box office. This milestone makes it the highest-grossing film of the director’s career.
The film surpassed Nolan’s 2012 release ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which grossed approximately $1.08 billion worldwide. ‘The Odyssey’ is now Nolan’s third film to exceed the $1 billion mark, joining ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008) and ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ His 2023 film ‘Oppenheimer’ finished with $975 million.
Record-Breaking Premium Formats
‘The Odyssey’ earned $289 million in IMAX theaters, making it the highest-grossing film in IMAX history. Industry tracking data from Comscore indicates that premium format screenings, particularly in IMAX 70mm, accounted for a record-setting portion of the film's global earnings.

The film is an adaptation of Homer’s classic Greek epic poem. It stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway. The cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron.
Market Performance and Rankings
In North America, the film earned $461 million, while international markets contributed $643 million. During its fourth weekend in theaters, it earned $110 million worldwide, comprising $79 million from international markets and $31.5 million from North America.
‘The Odyssey’ is reported to be the second highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, following 2024’s ‘Deadpool and Wolverine,’ which grossed $1.3 billion. It is also the second highest-grossing film of the year, behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which grossed $1.67 billion.
Released on July 17, ‘The Odyssey’ is the fifth movie released in 2026 to breach the $1 billion threshold. It joins ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ and ‘Michael.’ The film is scheduled to be released in China on August 14.
