The hazelnut harvest season has begun in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. During the collection, processing, and drying of the nuts, organic dust and pollen are released into the air.
Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü stated that dust scattered during the laying, collecting, and bagging of hazelnuts possesses allergic properties. He noted an increase in patients seeking medical attention for asthma and allergic rhinitis during this period.
The harvest time of hazelnuts has started in the Eastern Black Sea.
Risks of mold and humidity
Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü warned that if hazelnuts are not properly ventilated or are covered with nylon during the drying phase, mold fungi can form due to humidity.
Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü recommends the use of N95 protective masks for individuals with asthma or allergies who must enter hazelnut processing environments.
