The Kyiv Independent news portal reported that Russia launched a renewed attack with ballistic missiles. According to the Kyiv Independent report, the Ukrainian Air Force warned that Russian missiles were targeting Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv.
After three and a half years of war, Ukraine's armed forces lack missile-defence ammunition, so Russia has intensified its ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv and other cities. US-produced Patriot systems are considered the most effective defence against ballistic missiles, and the Ukrainian army has several of them but not enough interceptor missiles.
Concern is growing in Kyiv that unimpeded missile attacks could severely damage Ukraine's infrastructure again by next winter and push its people into even greater hardship.
Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory
In new massive drone attacks in the Russian hinterland, Ukraine set fire to at least one oil refinery and warehouses of Russia's largest online retailer Wildberries. Voronezh region governor Alexander Gussew said tens of thousands of square meters of warehouse space burned in the Voronezh region, Russia. According to Gussew, a 49-year-old man was fatally injured in the attack and two other people were injured. Wildberries announced in the morning that the facilities of its logistics center had been evacuated.
According to Governor Gussew, Russian air defense shot down 15 drones during a night attack in the Voronezh region. Gussew did not say how many drones hit their target. With its attacks on Wildberries, Ukraine aims to disrupt Russia's military supplies.
According to social media reports, an oil refinery in Orsk, in Russia's Orenburg region on the border with Kazakhstan, caught fire after a drone attack. Orenburg region governor Yevgeny Solntsev confirmed only that a fire broke out at an industrial facility after the attack; he did not say it was an oil refinery. According to Solntsev, there were no injuries in the attack. There was initially no statement from the Ukrainian side about the attacks.
Russia's state news agency Tass reported another fire at an oil refinery in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in the far east of Russia. There was initially no information about the cause of the fire or about drone attacks in the region of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
Ukraine wants to drive up Moscow's war costs and increase pressure on Russia's leadership to negotiate an end to the fighting with its attacks in the Russian hinterland; no progress on this is evident so far. At least 12 people were recently killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on Tatarstan, a central Russian region, according to Russian officials. The Tatarstan attack was one of the heaviest Ukrainian single attacks since the start of Russia's invasion in February 2022.
