Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on a drone factory in Kyiv on Friday. The strike hit a facility owned by a US company, marking the first incident in which Moscow has targeted a US company in the conflict.

No casualties occurred in the strike on the Kyiv drone factory. The facility was a production site for Terminal Autonomy, a company registered in Delaware, US.

Production and capabilities

Terminal Autonomy produces precision 'deep strike' drones with guidance systems resistant to Russian signal jamming methods. The factory produced AQ-400 Scythe and AQ-100 Bayonet drones.

Russian reporting

Russian state news agency Tass first reported the strike on Sunday, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense. Tass's report did not mention that the strike hit a facility belonging to a US company.

Tass reported that 'specialists from a Ukrainian-American company' worked at the facility.

US policy context

In early July, US President Donald Trump said the US would grant a license to produce Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine. Prior to the July statement, Donald Trump had taken a moderate approach to efforts to supply weapons to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense did not make a statement regarding the strike.

A source familiar with the company's operations confirmed that there were no fatalities resulting from the strike on the Terminal Autonomy facility. Additionally, former senior U.S. intelligence official Anthony Vinci stated that Russia does not distinguish between domestic and foreign ownership, noting that if American systems like Patriot missiles were produced in Ukraine, he believes those facilities would also be targeted.
