Sea water temperature along the coast of Istanbul, Turkey, has experienced a sudden drop as deep water rose to the surface. Poyraz winds over the Sea of Marmara intensified, causing a rapid decrease in coastal sea water temperatures within a short period, according to reports.
The temperature change was caused by the Poyraz wind pushing warm surface water out to the open sea, allowing cold deep water to rise near the coast. This natural process, described by marine scientists as upwelling, involves cold, mineral-rich deep water rising to the sea surface.
According to reports, coastal thermometers previously recorded temperatures of 25°C, which then dropped to 15°C.
Health risks and expert advice
The sharp drop in temperature poses health risks for swimmers. Experts warned that sudden contact with 15°C water can cause cold-water shock and severe muscle cramps.
Experts recommended that children, the elderly, and people with cardiovascular disease be extra careful when entering the sea until the temperature stabilizes.
Expected recovery
The duration of the upwelling event depends on the strength and continuity of the Poyraz wind. Once the wind weakens, surface waters are expected to warm again, with temperatures returning to normal within a few days.
