The grounded approach extends to its cast. Jon Bernthal appears as Frank Castle / The Punisher, and Spider-Man teams up with him at one point. Zendaya returns as MJ, and Sadie Sink plays a character whose storyline is central to the second half of the movie. Mark Ruffalo makes an appearance as Bruce Banner / Hulk, and Spider-Man even fights the Hulk — while Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, provides him with secret information from a bathhouse office that nods to spy films.

The antagonist, kept deliberately secret and out of promotional material, is an entity that can hop between consciousnesses and hijack bodies. The film, which runs 2 hours and 25 minutes, is considered more mature and emotional than the 'Home' trilogy, with themes of loneliness, longing for connection, and the impact of isolation.
