Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung to a colossal opening at the North American box office, earning an estimated US$355 million in its debut weekend, according to industry estimates. The figure places the film as the second-biggest North American opening in box office history, trailing only Avengers: Endgame's record of US$357 million.

However, other sources reported a slightly different North American figure of US$335 million for the film's debut. Similarly, the worldwide total has been reported as both US$928 million and US$927 million (about £687 million), depending on the source. Overseas, the film earned US$573 million outside North America.

The opening weekend gross already surpassed the film's estimated US$225 million production budget. Globally, it ranks as the second-biggest opening weekend in history behind Avengers: Endgame, which took in more than $1.2 billion in its 2019 debut.

The film stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, who are married in real life, alongside Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh, and Sadie Sink. In Brand New Day, Peter Parker lives in isolation after erasing his identity from the world, yet continues to fight crime in a world that has forgotten he is the masked superhero. The story picks up a few years after 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.

This is a colossal opening. The market is ripe-ripe-ripe for this film.

David A Gross added that overseas business should account for more than 60 per cent of the worldwide total, with good news already emerging from China. He also said the combination of Spider-Man and The Odyssey is taking the box office to new highs.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the ninth live-action film featuring the hero, following portrayals by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey took second place at the North American box office with US$51 million, for a total of nearly US$400 million in the United States and Canada. The Odyssey, based on Homer's epic poem, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland as Penelope and Telemachus.

Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 5 took third place with US$6.3 million, followed by Universal's Minions & Monsters with US$5.8 million and Disney's live-action Moana remake with US$5.3 million.

The film's strong performance gives a much-needed boost for Disney ahead of the December release of Avengers: Doomsday. It marks Marvel's last big-screen outing before that film, following a string of Marvel movies that have underperformed in recent years, including The Marvels and The Thunderbolts, which recouped their production costs but were among the studio's lowest-grossing films.

The success comes despite slower cinema attendance since the Covid-19 pandemic, which accelerated the shift to home-streaming. The North American box office is on track to pass $10 billion for the first time since 2019 this year, helped by films like Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, each of which has made more than $1 billion. July releases Brand New Day and The Odyssey are on track to top the $1 billion mark, while indie horror films Obsession and Backrooms brought in more than $390 million each. The film received largely positive reviews, with some calling it Tom Holland's best Spider-Man performance yet. Zendaya said of working with Holland, 'When you're best friends it's easy.'
