The Sudanese army and allied forces have taken full control of the El-Obeid area in North Kordofan following clashes with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Military sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that the army seized the location near the town of Bara.
Reports indicate that the forces inflicted heavy casualties and equipment losses on the RSF during what was described as precise military operations that broke the paramilitary group's defenses.
Videos circulated on social media showing Sudanese soldiers announcing control of the area alongside footage of destroyed RSF vehicles; however, these videos could not be independently verified.
As of 1545 GMT and into the evening, neither the Sudanese army nor the RSF issued official statements regarding the reported territorial gains or claims surrounding Bara.
The El-Obeid area is located near Bara, the second-largest city in North Kordofan—which remains under RSF control—approximately 57 kilometers north of the state capital.
Sudan has been gripped by a conflict between the army and the RSF since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, the displacement of nearly 13 million people, and a severe humanitarian crisis.
A local official reported that the army, along with other units, took control of Bara, any surrounding areas, and several specific nearby locations.
One military source stated that today's progress is not the end of the battle but the beginning of a new phase of decisive action.
According to some reports, the army and allied forces also captured the town of Bara and three nearby areas in North Kordofan.
These advances occurred a day after Sudanese authorities reported reclaiming the Burbur area south of El-Obeid following an RSF attack that killed 15 civilians and wounded seven others.
El-Obeid has faced repeated RSF drone attacks targeting its main power station, fuel depots, and other civilian sites amidst intensified fighting in the region over recent months where the army seeks to expand control around El-Obeid.
