Turkish Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler announced that the military readiness status of the Turkish Armed Forces is being updated. The move aims to ensure the security of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) while preserving the sensitive balances on the island.
Güler stated that Turkey is analyzing developments in the island and the region, including activities by Israel in the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus.
The Minister noted that Israel's approach to escalate tension in southern Syria in violation of the 1974 Agreement and its illegal actions are being closely monitored.
Regional security and NATO dynamics
Güler said that Turkey, together with NATO allies Bulgaria and Romania, is taking all necessary measures to maintain security and stability in the Black Sea under the principle of regional ownership.
Regarding Syria, the Minister stated that Turkey continues activities in close coordination and dialogue with the Syrian administration to preserve Syria's territorial integrity and regional stability.
Contextualizing these moves, Güler noted that the US orientation towards the Asia-Pacific region and the reduction of its conventional forces in Europe under the 2025 National Security Strategy Document necessitates European allies and Canada to take more responsibility. He added that following the Cold War, NATO has focused on out-of-area operations, crisis management, and the rules-based international order.
Parliamentary inquiry
CHP Gaziantep Deputy Hasan Öztürkmen submitted a written parliamentary inquiry to the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.
In the inquiry, Öztürkmen asked about NATO's new security architecture and Turkey's steps regarding increasing cooperation between the US, Israel, Greece, and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean. He also questioned whether Israel's attempts to threaten Turkey's national security via Syria have been detected.
