The Ödemiş 2nd High Criminal Court sentenced Olgun Gacar to aggravated life imprisonment on July 14 for the intentional killing of a woman. The court rejected Gacar's requests for sentence reductions based on good conduct or unjust provocation, stating his claims were abstract and lacked concrete evidence.
The incident took place on March 11, 2025, in the Türkmen Neighborhood of the Ödemiş district in İzmir, Turkey. According to the indictment, Gacar killed his former girlfriend, 27-year-old Fatma Kara, by dragging her by the neck for approximately 4 meters and slamming her body against the ground three times.
The autopsy report identified the cause of death as head trauma, which resulted in multiple skull fractures, intracranial hemorrhage, and widespread tissue damage to the brain, cerebellum, and brainstem.
The indictment stated that Gacar had previously subjected Kara to violence and threats, resulting in two restraining orders against him. It also noted that Gacar arrived at Kara's location with a rifle prior to the incident. Kara had terminated a pregnancy by Gacar approximately 20 days before the killing.
Defense of 'masculine pride'
During prosecution proceedings, Gacar claimed he did not intend to kill Kara and had no plan to do so. He stated that an argument occurred due to old issues and that he lifted Kara by the neck and threw her to the ground in a state of anger.
I did not want to kill Fatma intentionally, I had no plan to kill.
Gacar further claimed that his acts were driven by a moment of anger and frenzy after his 'masculine pride was hurt' by insults from Kara.
Fatma Kara was buried in the Köşk district of Aydın, Turkey.
