A Ukrainian drone attack in the Tatarstan region of central Russia killed at least 12 people. The strike targeted the city of Nizhnekamsk, located approximately 750 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Accounts regarding the casualty count vary. A local press service statement issued Monday reported that the attack killed at least 13 people and wounded 48 others. Regional authorities stated that at least 13 people died, including a child, and 39 were injured.
Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan, said Nizhnekamsk came under a massive drone attack targeting industrial and civilian facilities on Monday morning. Radmir Belyayev, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk, confirmed that unspecified industrial and civilian targets were hit.
Ukraine's military confirmed it struck the Taneco oil refinery in Russia overnight and recorded a fire at the site. The Russian Defense Ministry said it shot down 456 Ukrainian drones fired overnight. Ukraine's air force said Russia fired 126 drones in its overnight attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the drone campaign aims to force Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations to end the more than four-year-old full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He described the strikes as entirely justified responses to Russian attacks.
Violence continues in Ukraine
In Ukraine, a Russian artillery strike in the village of Bugaivka in the northeastern Kharkiv region killed five people. The regional prosecutor's office stated that on August 10, Russian forces carried out a massive artillery strike on the residential area, destroying various houses.
The World Health Organization's European office said one of its warehouses in the central Dnipro region of Ukraine was struck twice in less than 24 hours. The attacks destroyed emergency supplies worth an estimated $500,000. The United Nations stated that recent attacks have led to a jump in civilian casualties in both Russia and Ukraine.
