The United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has warned that 'four years of calm can be lost in a few weeks of escalation.'
Grundberg's warning follows the release of 73 UN and NGO staff members who had been detained. Tom Fletcher, the UN's under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, described their release as an 'appeal to our shared humanity.'

Hans Grundberg warned that Yemen now faces its highest risk of large-scale conflict since the 2022 truce, with Houthi attacks on commercial vessels escalating regional tensions, while humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher revealed that six million people — the highest number globally — are at emergency levels of deprivation, the humanitarian appeal is only 20% funded, and El Niño is forecast to slash rainfall by 40%, devastating crops; additionally, Grundberg called for resuming oil exports and Sanaa Airport flights to ease civilian suffering.
