Austrian Lawyer lawyer Volker Turk has won a second four-year term as the UN human rights chief. Following this appointment, Volker Turk will become the first person to complete two consecutive terms in the role since its creation.
The extension of the mandate was approved by the UN General Assembly for a duration of four years.
Diplomatic Opposition
The renewal of the term faced opposition from the United States. Additionally, there are conflicting reports regarding which other nations opposed the transition.
While some reports identify Israel as an opposing country to the extension, others state that Russia voiced its opposition.
The human rights chief faced opposition during the vote to extend the mandate.
