The US Treasury Department has added Waldo Perez Cortes to its Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons list. Cortes serves as Cuba's military, naval, and air attaché in Beijing.
The US State Department stated that Cortes, an official of Cuba's Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR), was involved in the procurement of military-related equipment from China to Cuba. He is accused of assisting in the procurement of such equipment from China for Cuba's armed forces.
The US did not specify the particular equipment, Chinese suppliers, or transactions allegedly involved in the procurement process.
Scope of US sanctions
The sanctions target officials responsible for the external relations and economic affairs services of the Cuban military, as well as military attachés in China and Russia. This included the designation of Cuban General Alvaro Lopez Miera, the chief of staff of the Cuban armed forces.
Under the new Cuba-related authority, two officials who were already subject to US sanctions were designated. In total, six Cuban nationals and five entities were added to the US Treasury Department's Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons list.
