William Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, has won the Democratic primary for Michigan's 7th Congressional District. The district is centered in Lansing.
The Associated Press projected Lawrence's victory in the three-way race, while Decision Desk HQ also projected a win for Lawrence over Bridget Brink and Matt Maasdam.
Lawrence, who co-founded the Sunrise Movement, will face Republican Representative Tom Barrett in the general election this November.
Primary endorsements and candidates
The Democratic primary saw Lawrence receive endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Rashida Tlaib.
Bridget Brink, the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, was endorsed by former Democratic Governors Jennifer Granholm and Jim Blanchard, as well as the Democratic Women's Caucus.
Matt Maasdam, who served as a military aide to President Obama, received support from US Senator Elissa Slotkin.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) did not take a side in the Michigan 7th District race.
In other primary contests, progressive activist and political science professor Randy Villegas defeated Jasmeet Bains. Bains had been backed by the DCCC.
In Maine, progressive state Auditor Matt Dunlap won a primary victory over Joe Baldacci, who had been backed by the DCCC. Baldacci ran for the seat of retiring US Representative Jared Golden.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has not endorsed a candidate in the Michigan 7th District race.
Regarding the general election, several top House Democratic moderates told Axios that Lawrence cannot beat Rep. Tom Barrett in Michigan's 7th District.
