The Mexican government officially acknowledged state complicity in the case in 2015.
The investigation into the 2014 abduction and presumed murder of 43 students, considered one of Mexico's worst human rights atrocities, reached a significant turning point when the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the Ayotzinapa case as a 'state crime.'
This acknowledgment follows allegations involving high-level state officials and the former governor of Guerrero, Ángel Aguirre. According to the Mexican Attorney General, evidence suggests a malicious operation was orchestrated from the highest levels of the State Executive Branch to conceal evidence, including security camera footage.

43 teacher-training students were abducted and presumed murdered in Iguala, Mexico, in 2014.
In late September 2014, 43 students disappeared from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College in Iguala, Mexico. While authorities believe the students were killed, only bone fragments from three of them have been recovered.
The investigation has been marked by allegations of evidence concealment. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) previously denounced that recordings of the events were hidden or destroyed to conceal evidence. Furthermore, Mexico's Attorney General, Ernestina Godoy, stated that the concealment of recordings was a malicious operation orchestrated from the highest levels of the State Executive Branch, involving orders issued by the then-governor with the participation of high-level state officials.
Following the start of President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration in October 2024, new lines of investigation into the case have been reopened.
