    On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, a magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu island at 4:27 p.m. local time. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter located in the Uki and Hikawa regions, approximately 5 km east of Uto.

    The quake registered a maximum of 7 on the Japanese shindo intensity scale. It caused significant damage, including the collapse of parts of Kumamoto Castle, the destruction of the Yatsushiro Shrine's worship hall, and the collapse of a chimney at a Nippon Paper Industries factory. The tremor also led to the suspension of operations at several major manufacturing plants, including those operated by Renesas, Toyota, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
