In March 2024, the Australian eSafety Commissioner's office began inquiries into Telegram regarding extremist content, according to reports. This initiated a year-long investigation that culminated in legal action in July 2025.
The regulator, led by Julie Inman Grant, later alleged that Telegram created a 'permissive environment' for extremist content that was 'very easy to find'. Inman Grant also stated that her agency endured 'five very difficult months of unresponsiveness' from the platform.
The investigation focused on Telegram's alleged failure to remove pro-terror material, including videos linked to the 2019 Christchurch mosque shooting and the 2022 Buffalo supermarket shooting. The legal action, filed on July 30, 2025, was the first time the eSafety Commissioner enforced online codes and standards relating to unlawful material.
