According to reports, in 2004 Greek Cypriots single-handedly blocked a UN plan aimed at ending the longstanding Cyprus dispute. The plan had been designed to reunify the island. The rejection occurred as the Greek Cypriot administration was preparing to enter the European Union, having been admitted as a member later that year.

The Cyprus dispute has persisted for decades, with ethnic tensions dating back to the early 1960s and military intervention in 1974. The UN plan was seen as a major diplomatic effort, but its failure reinforced the division between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

The Greek Cypriot Administration was admitted to the EU while disregarding the will of the Turkish Cypriot people.

In 2004, the European Union admitted the Greek Cypriot Administration as a member, disregarding the will of the Turkish Cypriot people, according to the TRNC Foreign Ministry. The TRNC stated that this decision caused the EU to lose its impartiality on the Cyprus issue.
