Israeli commandos conducted a military operation at Entebbe International Airport to rescue hostages.
In July 1976, Israeli commandos carried out a military operation at Entebbe International Airport to rescue hostages from an Air France plane that had been hijacked by Palestinian and German militants. While most hostages were rescued, three hostages lost their lives during the operation, and dozens of Ugandan soldiers were killed. Yonatan Netanyahu, an Israeli commander, was the only Israeli commando killed during the mission.
The operation was conducted by Israel without obtaining permission from the Ugandan government, leading the Organization of African Unity—the predecessor to the African Union—to condemn the action as a violation of Uganda's sovereignty. Following the operation, the then President of Uganda, Idi Amin, severed diplomatic relations with Israel and supported the Palestinian cause.
