The Consumer Federation of America sued Meta for failing to deal with scam ads on its platforms.
In April 2026, the Consumer Federation of America filed a lawsuit against Meta, alleging a failure to address scam advertisements on its platforms.
The legal action coincided with findings from the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), which identified more than 50 image and video ads in Meta's ad library containing abusive content. Researchers noted that these ads, which included explicit AI-generated material and suggestive imagery of minors, ran across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads. Reports indicated that these were not merely third-party posts but paid advertisements that were reviewed and approved by Meta while the company collected advertising revenue.
While Meta stated it removes content violating policies against child sexual exploitation and nudity, and noted that the majority of the identified ads had minimal reach, the TTP raised questions regarding the company's ability to prevent such material from appearing in its paid systems.
