India's cricket board, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), announced that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah continues to recover from a left knee injury sustained while fielding in a one-day international against England in Cardiff, UK, in July.
According to the BCCI, Bumrah, the world's top-ranked Test bowler, was initially included in the squad subject to a final fitness test and had been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, India. According to the BCCI, he was withdrawn from the squad due to persistent discomfort in his knee.
In his place, uncapped fast bowler Auqib Nabi has been named in the squad. The 29-year-old earned his first senior call-up after impressing in domestic cricket, including 104 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons. In the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, he took 60 wickets, helping Jammu and Kashmir, India, win its first title.
Nabi also featured for India A on their tour of Sri Lanka in June-July, claiming six wickets in two first-class matches. He is the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to receive a call-up to India's senior Test side.
The BCCI also stated that batter Sai Sudharsan's participation remains subject to fitness clearance. According to the BCCI, India begin the series in Galle, Sri Lanka, on August 15, with the second Test in Colombo, Sri Lanka, beginning on August 23.
According to the BCCI, India's Test squad for the series comprises: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sai Sudharsan*, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, and Auqib Nabi.
