An unknown perpetrator gained unauthorized digital access to the Register of Beneficial Owners (VwbP) in Liechtenstein during the night of July 30, 2026.
The Liechtenstein government was informed of the potentially successful attack on the VwbP on July 31, 2026. The register was established to help prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, containing beneficial ownership information on companies, foundations, and trusts.
Data stolen or illegally accessed from the VwbP
The government stated there were no indications that any data in the register had been altered or deleted. Preliminary investigation results were transmitted to the government on the afternoon of August 1, 2026.
A crisis team was set up to investigate the breach and inform those affected. This team was led by Prime Minister Brigitte Haas and Justice Minister Emanuel Schadler.
