DeepSeek, the Hangzhou-based Chinese AI start-up, has announced a “significant” price hike for its application programming interface (API) services.
The company announced on Thursday that overall pricing for its API services would increase “in the near future,” with specific plans to be advised at a later date.
This pricing adjustment follows the release of the DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731 model one week prior to the announcement. The model is a 284-billion-parameter lightweight version of the V4 series that was previewed in April.
The announcement occurs amid surging global demand for a new ultra-cheap model.
Industry observers have raised questions regarding the timing of the increase. AI developer Michael Guo wrote on X on Thursday, “DeepSeek choosing to raise prices at this time – isn’t this just asking for trouble?”
Guo argued that new American models, including Meta's Muse Spark and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna, are competitive with DeepSeek models in both capabilities and price.
