Ford is recalling 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs from the 2021–2026 model years due to a risk of engine compartment fires, according to documents filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall follows reports of 15 incidents involving fires that may have originated within the engine compartment wiring harness.
Total Ford Bronco and Bronco Raptor vehicles subject to the recall.
Wiring harness and fire risk
The issue stems from insufficient abrasion protection on the wiring harness. This lack of protection can allow movement between the harness and nearby components, exposing the internal wires.
Exposed wiring can result in an arc that ignites surrounding parts. A short circuit in the engine compartment may also cause smoke to enter the cabin through the air vents.
Drivers may receive a warning message on the instrument cluster regarding the issue.
Remedial actions
To mitigate the risk of future short circuits, dealer technicians will install convolute sheathing and abrasion tape on the wiring harness to prevent chafing.
Ford plans to notify vehicle owners between August 24 and August 28.
