While Nintendo has no intention of releasing any of its exclusive games on PC, a fan-led project has brought the original Pokémon titles to the platform. The Gen1Recomp recompilation project, developed by bryanthaboi, recreates Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow.
Gen1Recomp is a native LÖVE2D recreation of the games that uses hand-written Lua for its engine and map behavior. To decode game data and graphics, the project requires ROM files supplied by the player.
Visual and gameplay features
The project includes a tilt option that delivers 3D voxel visuals, which can be enabled by pressing the 3 key during gameplay. These visuals are similar to the HD-2D visual style used in the Octopath Traveler series by Square Enix. Gameplay videos showcasing these visuals were shared by Video Game Esoterica and Retro Dando.
Players can also choose to use Game Boy Color visuals. Additional gameplay features include the ability to alter game speed and the option to save and load from any location.
The original Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow titles have previously received official remakes as FireRed and LeafGreen on the Game Boy Advance, as well as Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! on the Nintendo Switch.
