Google is discontinuing Google Assistant on mobile devices. The company is replacing the existing service with Gemini, its next-generation AI-powered assistant for Android.
The removal of access to Google Assistant will begin on September 4. Google stated that the removal process may take a few weeks to reach all users.
Once availability is removed, users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on phones, tablets, or paired devices. This deprecation also applies to Wear OS watches and headphones.
Impact on Automotive and Home Systems
The deprecation of Google Assistant applies to vehicles running Android Auto projected from a mobile device. However, Google Assistant will continue to function in cars with Google built-in beyond September 4, 2026.
Gemini is coming to Google TV devices, Google Home speakers, and smart displays.
The deprecation of Google Assistant was originally set for the end of 2025 but was later extended to 2026. At the moment, the 'Switch to Google Assistant' option remains available in the Gemini app.
