Google has unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 as part of its Made by Google 2026 announcements, introducing Gemini Intelligence to Wear OS and a range of new health and safety features.

Gemini Intelligence and Proactive Suggestions

The Pixel Watch 5 introduces Proactive Suggestions, a Gemini Intelligence feature previously known as Magic Cue and renamed 'Proactive' by Google across all platforms. In Google Messages, these suggestions offer one-tap actions such as sending a requested phone number or location as a reply, setting reminders, and checking schedules. The Pixel 11 generates insights for these suggestions, which are then bridged to the watch. Proactive Suggestions also appear in Google Messages notifications, with Google looking into supporting more apps in the future.

On-device smart replies on the watch now show three responses instead of one, and a Gemini Nano model upgrade makes them 50% faster.

50% faster

Smart replies on the Pixel Watch 5 are 50% faster thanks to a Gemini Nano model upgrade.

Task automation on the watch face lets users start a task on their phone, such as food ordering, get updates on the watch, and receive a notification when it's time to confirm the order on the Pixel 11. Offline Gemini commands work without a phone or internet and can set timers/alarms, adjust brightness and modes, control music, open apps, and initiate workouts.

The Gemini app on the watch gets a Neural Expressive visual update and access to Personal Intelligence and past chats. It can tap into Gmail, Calendar, Keep, and other connected apps to answer questions. The raise-to-talk gesture is no longer limited to the watch face.

New 'At a Glance' Space

The Pixel Watch 5 introduces a new 'At a Glance' space at the bottom of watch faces, showing active, ongoing content like timers, alarms, workouts, music, flight details, and navigation updates. This feature differs from the same-named feature on Pixel phones and is richer than the lone icon used before.

The 'At a Glance' brings dynamic, context-aware updates to the watch face, such as live boarding passes at the airport or remaining stops on a commute.

Performance and GPS

The Pixel Watch 5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor and a power-efficient dual-chip architecture. It has 50% more RAM and a 12% CPU boost, making it 20% faster.

2x GPS accuracy

Pixel Watch 5 offers 2x greater GPS route tracking accuracy compared to previous generations in the toughest environments.

GPS route tracking uses Google Maps technology that traces satellite ray paths through 3D building models and taps into a global network of weather reference stations to adjust satellite readings. This performance is said to outperform Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro.

Health and Safety Features

A new on-wrist Strength Training workout experience with step-by-step guidance is coming soon. Google Health Coach creates customized strength workouts tailored to users' goals, and users can also build and customize their own routines in the Google Health app. The coach translates recovery metrics like sleep and heart rate variability into adaptive recommendations, such as swapping an intense run for indoor yoga during a heat wave.

Sleep tracking offers 15% more accurate sleep stage detection, bedtime automations that pause audiobooks, and a dedicated bedtime watch face. Smart Wake monitors heart rate and movement during the 30 minutes before the alarm and wakes the user during lighter sleep before the set alarm time.

The watch builds on existing features like Loss of Pulse Detection and satellite communications and introduces Breathing Emergency Detection, an industry-first feature on a wrist. It uses PPG, accelerometer, barometer, and on-device AI to monitor severe, persistent drops in oxygen saturation from drug toxicity accidents, severe pneumonia, or choking. If a breathing emergency is detected and the user is unresponsive, the watch can automatically call emergency services and transmit the user's exact location; this feature is launching first in Europe.

Health Guardian and Availability

Three new Health Guardian monthly trend summaries—blood pressure trends, sleep breathing quality trends, and insulin resistance trends—are rolling out soon. The Health Foundation Models behind them were trained on billions of minutes of sensor data from opted-in users and validated against gold-standard clinical measurements. The first detailed summary arrives after one month of wear, and monthly summaries will soon be available across Google's wearable portfolio, including the new Google Fitbit Air.

The Pixel Watch 5 is available for pre-order starting August 12 and will be on shelves August 20, starting at $399 for the 41mm and $429 for the 45mm. The Stephen Curry Special Edition pre-orders start August 12 for $579 and arrive on-shelf September 3.

The watch works with most phones running Android 12.0 or newer and requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. Health Guardian features availability varies by region, country, and device. Some features require the Google Health mobile app and/or Google Health Premium membership, and are available in select countries and languages to users 18+. Some features are available through the Gemini app, and Google apps may not be available in all countries or languages.
